#21 – Deborah Gale Tirico – “Vine Divine” Wool Table Topper Rug– TWO DAY CLASS Feb 7-8 Tue-Wed
A study in felted wool appliqué with embroidery embellishment
Quilters and artists have long been influence by the Bible, but none more than the appliqué artists of the 19th century. The wreath of grapes is one such Classic Baltimore album block reminding us of the Eucharist and the blood of Christ in an unbroken circle. The original Baltimore block that was a reference for this study was originally creted using a borderie perse* method, with leaves, stems and grapes being cut from a printed fabric and repositioned in the wreath design. This design draws on the original with a few less grapes and the addition of an illuminated letter.
A fan of the Baltimore album style of appliqué I am excited to interpret classic antebellum styles of Baltimore album classics in my own signature style of dimensional felted wool appliqué.
Students will learn to make freezer paper patterns, create placement guides and work with embroidery guides. Basting techniques will be presented for increased accuracy and students will be encouraged to embellish the rug using beads, metallic cord and wool threads in their own style to truly make the rug their own expression. Each student will design her own illuminated letter. Students will learn appliqué methods including the tack stitch and my signature needle slanting techniques for adding dimension to the work. Adding the appliquéd lamb ears will be presented in easy to understand visual method. Tools that make working in felted wool easy and fun will be made available. The construction of the final rug will be fully discussed.
A variety of surface embroidery stitches will be reviewed.
This work is included in my second book “Dimensions in Wool Appliqué, Baltimore Style”
