#28 – Deborah Gale Tirico – “Cornucopia” Wool Table Topper Rug– TWO DAY CLASS Feb 9-10 Fri-Sat
Celebrare la Cornucopia!
A study in felted wool appliqué with embroidery embellishment
The cornucopia, or horn of plenty, is the third work in my Baltimore Album series. A symbol of abundance and nourishment, this design celebrates the symbolism stitched into Baltimore Album quilt blocks of the 19th century, including the pineapple which means welcome, and the acorn which symbolizes loyalty. This piece includes specialty threads, beads and colorful, luscious felted wool and will be a stunning topper for any surface.
Students will learn to make freezer paper patterns, create placement guides and work with templates. A variety of basting techniques will be presented for increased accuracy. In addition, students will be encouraged to embellish the rug using beads, specialty threads and unique stitches in their own style to truly make the rug their own expression.
Students will learn appliqué methods including the tack stitch, my signature needle slanting techniques and fabric layering and trapunto stuffing methods for adding dimension to the work. Tools that make working in felted wool easy and fun will be made available.
During the class I will be speaking to the symbolism in historic quilts and interior decor during the mid 19th century.
A variety of surface embroidery stitches will be reviewed.
This project is included in my 2nd book “Dimension is Wool Appliqué, Baltimore Style” which was released in January 2017.
