Melissa Simross

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved quilts. Having been a past quilt shop owner and now an online source for all of your applique needs, I have been happily quilting now for over 20 years.  But it wasn’t until about 10 years ago, that I truly found my real passion….applique and Baltimore Album Quilts! This is when I found out about The Elly Sienkiewicz Applique Academy. I attended and it opened up a whole new world for me. At that time, I was working on an appliqued quilt called the ‘Robert’s Floral Garden’. I went home and had it finished for show-and-tell by the next year. During that year of working on this quilt, I found out that I loved experimenting with stitching various beads and different kinds of floss on the blocks, so another passion is born. The following year I set out to make my first Baltimore Album quilt, designing several of the blocks myself including the center medallion. I couldn’t believe how much fun this was!  That quilt was 4 years in the making. During this time I was so honored and happy that Elly Sienkiewicz asked me to make a block for one of her quilts, Dear Friends Remembered, that was published in her book Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts and also hung at the 2010 Houston Quilt Convention , in the Netherlandsand other exhibitions. Then I was equally honored when Jan Vaine asked me to do a block for her book, The Art of Elegant Hand Embroidery Embellishment and Applique. I just couldn’t believe I was getting to do all of this! Now here we are and I am thrilled I get to come and have the opportunity to teach for the 4th time at the Kathy Dunigan Academy of Applique™. There is nothing I love more than sharing my passion for all things applique!
