November News 2014

Hi Everyone!

We are just dropping in with you for an update of TKDAA™ happenings.

The colder days are upon us now and our minds and hearts turn towards the holiday seasons. Ever grateful as Thanksgiving rolls around; a time to be near to those we love or to remember ever so lovingly. May your days be full of blessings and friends and family near.

On a “quilting note”, like many of you, we just returned from Houston’s wonderful QuiltFestival. What a spectacular show for their 40th anniversary! The quilts and vendors all took our breaths away; a true “not to be missed” show of all the latest quilts and quilt items we could desire. While there, we were busy handing out postcards to everyone we could meet up with, announcing TKDAA™. We were wearing our new logo Tee shirts, adorned with our TKDAA™ name. We now have them for sale for $22. (plus shipping; S-XXL). We hauled around bags full of fat quarters and handed them to most anyone that said hi to us and wanted to know about the academy. In the crowds there, while visiting Sharon Schamber’s booth, I even managed to “punch” someone, quite by accident, and boy was I red faced; I couldn’t give her a fat quarter fast enough! All ended in laughter so maybe we will see her at TKDAA™ one day!

We want to offer you a fun way to tell the ones you love about giving TKDAA™ tuition as a gift for Christmas, Chanukkah, or Valentine's Day. Maybe just a gentle hint about wanting a place at TKDAA™ 2015. We are including in this email, a “coupon” that could be passed on and we hope that someone looking for a special gift may be able to use it. If you have NOT yet sent in your registration we encourage you to do so very soon, so as not to be forgotten in all of the holiday rush. Many classes have a spot still waiting for you and there are all kind of fun events for you to attend and to be among those that love the beautiful art of applique as you do.

Here’s a WONDERFUL event that we are so excited to be hosting for you…
QUEEN ELLY SIENKIEWICZ AND HER REGAL TRUNK SHOW; HONORING OF “OUR BELOVED ELLY”, TKDAA®’s First Honored Quilter, Feb 6, 2015. (ok, we admit we named it that as a way of telling Elly how much we adore her – she, though deserving of a royal title in the quilt world, would be a bit embarrassed).
So this is a reminder not to miss this fabulous trunk show with Miss Elly, even if you are only able to attend for a day or two. We can help with your plans if you need guidance on your registration. Don't miss a visit with Miss Elly - come to her Trunk Show! BUT, if you cannot attend the event, there will be an autograph night or two after dinners, informally set with "Open Bar" and a more intimate chance to chat with Elly. Her wonderful new book will be available for sale purchase and personalizing.

Let us give you a little preview of some of the fun tales that Elly will regale us with…

Too Old for Teddy Bears? Never!”
Elly tells me her earliest quilt was a large bed-size appliquéd scene of "Wyman House, Princeton University" where her father was Dean of the Graduate School. She made it for her parents' 25th Anniversary, about 1964 and it will be in her trunk show. Eight years or so later came two pairs of "Character Quilts," something she designed and made for her two of her nieces and her middle child. Each quilt began with a patchwork print covering a sturdy previously owned blanket. A round pillow form filled the head; arms emerged from right and left sides, legs from the bottom. The children loved them. First came "Warm Wanda" and "Cozy Cora" —Toussle-haired red-heads with rosey cheeks and wide smiles. Then came her Teddy Bear Quilt for son Alex ... (she tells me she will try to bring this one, too, to share with us). And when Elly's father died at 57 after a 30 year-bout with illness, her mother ruefully suggested, I'd like a Character Quilt of my own — a Prince who would wrap his arms around me. From printed patchwork to Baltimore Revival ... don't miss this “once in a lifetime” visit with Elly ! We are so thrilled to have her with us for this new academy!

We want to announce again that all Main Conference attendees will be registered for the Bernina machine giveaway at the Gala Farewell dinner. We are thrilled to have a chance to give away such a fantastic product, made possible by Bernina and The Texas Quiltworks Bernina store of Rockwall, Texas! This machine will have a one of a kind front “skin” on it from TKDAA™, with photos coming soon.

Don’t forget to order your Tee shirts with the logo before the holiday season. We can ship right away or hold for you at the check in desk Feb 3-7, 2015, when the event rolls around. $22. S-XXL, shipping $3. for domestic, tbd for international orders. Order in November and receive a special fat quarter and get your name in a drawing for a free One Day class in 2016!
Be working on your Challenge block or any item design, using denim somewhere in the design. Denim? While we wouldn’t normally expect to see it in our block designs, we do this now for a Texas first celebration challenge. Someone is going to win the $500. EllySienkiewiczApplique Scholarship”for 2016 tuition, SO VERY GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY MERCY AND JIM SAVAGE! Thank you so much, Mercy and Jim!
And “The Elly” goes to…………..

So until we meet again, may you find time for your quilting joys and time to be with family and friends you love.
